UAW Schedules Strike Authorization Vote for Next Week

The United Auto Workers (UAW) plans to conduct strike authorization votes next week to determine if its 150,000 members are prepared to go on strike when their contract expires on September 14th.

Expressing frustration with the slow progress of contract negotiations, the UAW stated that discussions have so far been limited to non-economic issues.

UAW President Shawn Fain emphasized that the decision to strike ultimately lies with the automakers, including General Motors, Ford, and Stellantis. Fain stated that the union’s priorities are clear, the companies can afford them, and there is sufficient time for serious negotiations.

The UAW recently increased strike pay to $500 per week per member and currently has over $825 million in its strike fund.

In response, Ford stated that it takes pride in employing more UAW-represented hourly workers in America than any other automaker. The company looks forward to collaborating with the UAW to find creative solutions during this transformative period in the industry.

General Motors emphasized its commitment to reaching an agreement that benefits all stakeholders and highlighted its significant economic impact in supporting job creation.

Stellantis did not comment directly but previously mentioned its efforts to balance worker concerns with maintaining competitiveness in the market.

President Biden urged both parties to negotiate a deal to avoid a strike that could negatively impact the automotive industry. He emphasized the importance of keeping jobs in existing manufacturing communities, paying fair wages, and honoring the right of workers to organize.

Biden also cautioned the UAW regarding their wage-increase demands, highlighting the need for the U.S. auto industry to remain competitive domestically and globally, especially during the transition to a clean energy economy.

The UAW is demanding a 40 percent wage increase, reinstatement of cost-of-living adjustments, an end to lower compensation for new workers, restoration of pensions and retiree benefits, and equal compensation and job security in electric vehicle plants.
