US Stops Some Foreign Aid Programs for Niger Following Military Takeover, Says Blinken

The State Department has announced that certain foreign aid programs in Niger will be temporarily halted following the military overthrow of the country’s democratic government. However, humanitarian and food aid will still be provided, according to a statement by Secretary of State Antony Blinken. The provision of U.S. assistance to Niger is contingent upon democratic governance and respect for constitutional order, Blinken emphasized. The U.S. remains committed to supporting the people of Niger and calls for the immediate restoration of the democratically-elected government. President Mohamed Bazoum, who was elected in 2021 as Niger’s first democratic leader, has been removed from power and detained by the military. While the U.S. has not labeled it as a coup, they demand the release of President Bazoum and the restoration of his presidential authority. President Biden has also called for Niger’s hard-earned democracy to be preserved, affirming the right of the Nigerien people to choose their leaders through free and fair elections. The American embassy in Niamey, Niger’s capital, has partially evacuated due to the perceived risks associated with military activity. The military junta, led by Gen. Abdourahmane Tchiani, assumed control of the government after several days of fighting. Although Tchiani is recognized as the nation’s leader by his forces, the U.S. and its allies do not recognize his authority. The AP has reported that Tchiani’s forces have sought assistance from Russia, including the Wagner Group of mercenaries. Regional leaders are preparing a military intervention plan if President Bazoum is not reinstated by Sunday.
