US-Mexico Joint Committee Unearths Major Discovery Regarding Border Barrier

Migrant advocates, environmentalists, and the Mexican and US governments have all expressed their opposition to the controversial border barrier that Texas has erected in the Rio Grande in order to prevent migrants from crossing into the United States. Despite the discovery of at least two bodies near the barrier since its installation in July and a lawsuit filed by the Justice Department, Texas Governor Greg Abbott remains firm in his decision to keep the barrier in place, citing the constitutional right of Texas to protect its border with Mexico. However, according to a recent topographical survey conducted by the federal government and reported by CBS News, it has been revealed that almost 80% of the barrier is actually located in Mexico, not the US.

The survey, which was filed by the Biden administration on Tuesday in federal district court as part of their complaint against the orange buoys used in Abbott’s Operation Lone Star, was a collaborative effort between the governments of the US and Mexico through the International Boundary and Water Commission. This commission was established to determine the international boundaries between the two countries. According to the survey, 79% of the nearly 1,000-foot barrier, or approximately 780 feet, is technically situated within Mexican territory, despite Texas’ intentions.

Last month, Mexico expressed their concerns about the barrier to the US, with Secretary of Foreign Relations Alicia Barcena stating that Mexico planned to send an inspection team to determine the extent to which the barrier encroaches upon their waters. CBS News notes that this recent survey is likely to further escalate Mexico’s opposition to the buoys, as it is the federal government’s responsibility to set border and foreign policy, not Texas’. A US district court judge is scheduled to hold the next hearing on the government’s lawsuit on Tuesday.
