US Implements Import Ban on Three Chinese Companies Amid Rising Concerns of Forced Labor Exploitation

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced on Tuesday that three Chinese companies will no longer be able to export goods to the United States due to forced labor concerns.

According to DHS, a chemical product company, a wool company, and a textile company will be added to the list of sanctioned companies for using forced Uyghur labor in China’s Xinjiang province.

Starting from September 27, these three China-based companies will be prohibited from exporting to the United States. This brings the total number of Chinese companies restricted due to forced labor to 27, in compliance with the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act (UFLPA).

These sanctions are part of an effort to hold accountable those responsible for the ongoing genocide and crimes against humanity targeting Uyghurs and other religious and ethnic minority groups in the region, as stated by DHS.

The Chinese government has long targeted the Uyghur population, with the United States officially labeling the government’s actions as genocide. Reports have emerged highlighting prison camps and systematic efforts to eradicate Uyghur language, religion, and culture.

“We do not tolerate companies that use forced labor to profit and abuse human rights,” said Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas.

“The Department of Homeland Security, along with partners across the Biden-Harris Administration, will continue to prosecute these companies, fight for the rights of the abused, and work towards the elimination of Uyghur forced labor in China,” Mayorkas added.

The UFLPA, signed into law by President Biden in 2021, has prompted Customs and Border Protection to review thousands of shipments for evidence of goods produced with forced labor, according to the statement.

“The United States does not and will not tolerate products made with forced labor entering our country,” stated Robert Silvers, chair of the Forced Labor Enforcement Task Force.

“Through the enforcement actions taken today, the Forced Labor Enforcement Task Force reaffirms our country’s commitment to maintaining a fair, just, and secure global supply chain.

The three newly sanctioned companies are Xinjiang Zhongtai Group Co., Xinjiang Tianshan Wool Textile Co., and Xinjiang Tianmian Foundation Textile Co.
