Due to severe weather conditions, U.S. government offices in the Washington D.C. area closed early on Monday. The National Weather Service issued warnings for possible tornadoes, damaging winds, and large hailstones across the eastern U.S. Thunderstorms and strong winds caused power outages for nearly 200,000 homes and businesses in Maryland and Virginia. In total, 800,000 customers in the southern and mid-Atlantic states were affected.

Fortunately, the nation’s capital avoided any tornadoes as the tornado watch expired at 9 p.m. EDT. However, a coastal flood advisory remained in effect until 4 a.m. 08000 GMT. Despite the potential risks, no tornadoes were reported by 9 p.m. EDT.

The Federal Aviation Administration grounded departing flights at airports in New York, Washington, Philadelphia, Atlanta, and Baltimore due to thunderstorms. Flights were rerouted to avoid the storms as much as possible.

In response to the severe weather, libraries, museums, the National Zoo, pools, and other municipal and federal services in the Washington area closed early. Federal employees were required to depart no later than 3 p.m.

As a result of the severe weather conditions, over 2,600 U.S. flights were canceled, with Washington Reagan National Airport and Washington Dulles Airport experiencing significant disruptions.
