Unveiling the Truth: Trump’s Evasive Stance Amid Capitol Riot Controversy

In a Sunday interview, former President Donald Trump, who is currently leading the race for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, avoided answering questions about whether he watched the Capitol riot on television. He stated that he would reveal this information at a later time. The AP reports that Trump declined to disclose how he spent January 6, 2021, when the insurrection occurred and whether he made any phone calls during the incident.

When asked if he watched the attack unfold on TV in a dining room at the White House, Trump replied, “I’m not going to tell you. I’ll tell people later at an appropriate time.” Former aides of Trump have claimed that he secluded himself in a room off the Oval Office to watch the events, sometimes even rewinding and rewatching parts. During the interview, which was recorded at Trump’s golf club in New Jersey, Trump refused to divulge whom he called as the violence unfolded, stating, “Why would I tell you that?” When questioned about his silence during the violence, Trump defended himself by saying that he made “beautiful statements” on the day of the attack.

Trump’s supporters, motivated by his false claims about the 2020 presidential election, stormed the Capitol as Congress was in the process of certifying Joe Biden’s victory. While Trump is facing federal criminal charges for his attempts to overturn the election results, he is not facing charges related to the insurrection. According to the AP, over 1,000 people have been charged with federal crimes in relation to the riot, and more than 600 have pleaded guilty or been convicted. Trump mentioned the possibility of pardoning some of these individuals, including former Proud Boys leader Enrique Tarrio, who was sentenced to 22 years in prison. The full transcript of the NBC interview, which included unaired portions, revealed Trump’s assertion that Tarrio was treated “horribly.”
