Unveiling the Significance of Sustained Support for Ukraine: Why it Matters

Republican support for aid to Ukraine is dwindling as House GOP opposition to the latest proposed supplemental support for Ukraine reveals. This poses a dangerous trend, with some Republicans failing to comprehend the strategic and political risks involved in weakening support for Ukraine’s fight against Russian aggression.

The diminishing Republican support for Ukraine stems from skepticism towards President Biden’s leadership on this issue. And this skepticism is not unwarranted.

In the year between Biden’s inauguration and Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, the Biden administration has appeased Russia on various fronts, including energy policy, arms control policy, and regarding Ukraine. Furthermore, their withdrawal from Afghanistan showcased significant weakness and a lack of seriousness. The president even hinted that he could tolerate a “minor incursion” by Russia in Ukraine.

The president effectively greenlit a major invasion. As the invasion began, intelligence agencies that failed to predict the rapid fall of the Taliban in Afghanistan confidently asserted that Putin would capture Kyiv in a matter of days. As a result, the administration withdrew our diplomats and prepared for another defeat.

CONGRESS, STOP PUTIN AND BOOST UKRAINE. PUT YOUR MONEY WHERE YOUR MOUTH IS AND STEP UP

Only when it became evident that Ukrainians were ready to fight did the administration reluctantly offer support. However, unnecessary debates, such as the recent one regarding ATACMS missiles, over whether providing certain weapons would provoke the Russians further, have weakened the impact of the assistance, contributing to a stalemate in Ukraine.

The perplexing aspect is that Republicans, despite observing this record, are attacking President Biden for being too strong.

A victory for Russia in Ukraine would have catastrophic consequences for American security. It would increase the likelihood of expanded war in Europe, with Putin potentially seeking to seize more territories, not just in Ukraine but beyond. It would also signal to the Chinese Communist regime that America is not serious, thereby raising the prospects of war in the Pacific.

HOW CHINA REALLY VIEWS THE WAR IN UKRAINE

Moreover, a Russian victory would provide comfort and confidence to America’s adversaries, including those in Moscow, Beijing, Tehran, and Pyongyang. Putin’s recent summit with Kim Jong Un, the North Korean dictator’s first foreign trip in four years, further solidifies the Eurasian axis that is hostile to American interests and those of our allies.

Our allies, such as Canberra, Tokyo, Seoul, and Taipei, who support Ukraine, would interpret our abandonment of Kyiv as a signal that they are on their own.

The Republican Party, which played a key role in winning the Cold War, earned the trust of generations of Americans by emphasizing the link between freedom and prosperity at home and the security of Europe and Asia.

Any inclination towards isolationism or shifting focus solely to Asia, despite the collusion of Russia and China, would undermine American safety. It would also convince Americans that our party is incapable of governing, thereby harming Republican candidates in general elections.

Isolationism is beginning to permeate our party’s rhetoric and policy, increasingly jeopardizing our party’s relevance in politics. As realists who recognize the responsibility of safeguarding our nation and its interests in a dangerous world, we must reject the notion of “endless wars” as a naive invention of the left.

Republicans should also question the idea that the fighting in Ukraine is causing Americans to become “war-weary” when it is Ukraine, not America, that is at war.

Ukrainians are fighting and sacrificing for their freedom while simultaneously degrading the power of a hostile Russia that, in cooperation with China, seeks to establish a new world order that diminishes America’s freedom and prosperity. Not a single American serviceman has been a casualty in Ukraine’s war of self-defense, which we are supporting with a small fraction of our overall defense spending.

We implore Republicans to continue providing aid to Ukraine to prevent political irrelevance for our party and to avoid tragedy for our country.
