Unveiling the Rolls-Royce Amethyst Droptail: Elevating the Floral Theme with Exquisite Gemstones

Rolls-Royce unveils its first Droptail commission, the floral-themed La Rose Noire, during Monterey Car Week. Just a week later, another Droptail makes its debut in Gstaad, Switzerland. This stunning vehicle is commissioned by a client who wants to celebrate his gem business, his home region, and his son. Introducing the Amethyst Droptail, named after the son’s birthstone, a quartz crystal. According to the International Gem Society, February’s gem ranges from pale lilac to deep reddish purple, symbolizing royalty, spirituality, mental clarity, and healing. The Amethyst Droptail features intense colors to reflect the gem’s value and desirability.

Guatemala, Panama, and Brazil are home to the Globe Amaranth flower, which has a lilac connection. Rolls-Royce mentions that this flower elegantly blooms in the desert near one of the client’s homes.

The roadster boasts a soft purple body color called Globe Amaranth, accented with aluminum flakes. Deep purple Amethyst paint, blended with red, blue, and violet mica flakes, adds a unique swirl. Carbon fiber sections with book-matched chevron patterns and Amethyst-tinted lacquer provide contrast along the car’s hem. Mauve accents are visible on the 22-inch wheel spokes.

Paying attention to detail, Rolls-Royce meticulously finishes the brightwork. The vanes of the Pantheon grill have two finishes: a polished leading edge and brushed broadsides. The 3D-printed composite lower grille features 202 stainless steel ingots, hand-painted in Globe Amaranth. A rounded and polished amethyst ring surrounds the Spirit of Ecstasy, engraved with the word “Droptail.” The stone is shaped into a cabochon, with a convex upper surface and flat underside.

The interior is custom-designed based on the client’s preference for Calamander Light wood, known for its varying tones. The seat bolsters are adorned with Sand Dunes leather, framing the Amethyst leather centers. Amethyst cabochons are placed around the gauges in the instrument cluster. The electrochromic glass panel in the detachable roof transitions from a purple tint when opaque to a caramel hue matching the Sand Dunes leather when translucent.

Similar to the La Rose Noire, the Amethyst Droptail features a watch centerpiece in the instrument panel. This custom commission comes from Swiss watchmaker Vacheron Constantin and is known as the “Les Cabinotiers Armillary Tourbillon.” Rolls-Royce collaborates with Vacheron Constantin to ensure harmony between the colors and materials of the car and watch. The watch remains on display on a white-gold baseplate with a sunburst guilloché pattern.

The car’s wood deck, located behind the cabin, is an impressive showpiece. Rolls-Royce claims that this is the only “raw” wooden surface that produces downforce on a road car. To protect the surface, Rolls-Royce invents special coatings for the book-matched and slip-matched Calamander Light wood, achieving a patent for its work.
