Unveiling the Mesmerizing Charm of Kim Kardashian in ‘American Horror Story: Delicate’

Well-played, Ryan Murphy.

Just when we thought we’d escaped the clutches of “American Horror Story,” a series that lost its appeal over the years, the brilliant producer enticed us back with Season 12 of FX’s anthology series, “Delicate,” featuring the incomparable Kim Kardashian.

The “PAW: Patrol” star and reality TV personality takes on a significant role in the latest installment (★, Wednesdays at 10 EDT/PDT and streaming on Hulu), which revolves around a young woman (Emma Roberts) who may be carrying the devil’s child. However, Kardashian’s casting alone cannot salvage this lackluster season, which disappoints with its tired interpretation of “Rosemary’s Baby.”

Shortly after the season premiere, Hollywood actress Anna Victoria Alcott (Roberts) goes for another fertility appointment as she and her husband (Matt Czuchry) struggle to have a baby. However, from the start, there’s a sense of danger: Anna experiences sharp pain after the egg retrieval. An unperturbed nurse assures her, “Nothing worth waiting for is ever easy.” There’s also a creepy doctor, suspicious prescriptions, and a mysterious woman who may or may not be Anna’s stalker.

In other words, it’s a plot that has been done before in countless horror movies (and even in “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1” with its infamous birth scene). Adding to the disappointment are the lackluster performances by Roberts and Czuchry, who have no chemistry, and the dull writing exacerbates their one-dimensional characters.

The few moments of intrigue in the premiere episode come when Kardashian graces the screen. Despite being criticized as vapid and superficial, she embraces her Valley girl persona, portraying Anna’s concerned publicist, Siobhan. She delivers cutting remarks about everyone from Hilary Swank to the directors of “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” showcasing her knack for witty wordplay. Siobhan plays the dual role of Anna’s confidante and a source of exposition.

The ruthless one-liners continue when Anna appears on “Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen,” and Siobhan must comfort her unraveling client. Siobhan humorously advises, “Oh honey, don’t cry. Your face cannot get puffy for Andy.”

While there are some uninspired jokes about Tom Sandoval and other “Bravolebrities,” Kardashian’s acting may not be award-worthy, but she certainly fulfills the season’s campy potential, following in the footsteps of past “American Horror Story” stars Jessica Lange and Lady Gaga.

For that, Kim, we thank you. You’re doing amazing, sweetie.
