Los Angeles Rams coach Sean McVay has reflected on the late field goal against the San Francisco 49ers in Week 2 that reduced the lead to seven as time ran out.
In the big picture of the NFL, the kick may have seemed insignificant. A loss is a loss, regardless of whether a team is down by seven or 10 points. McVay explained his decision to kick the field goal during a press conference on Monday.

“Our intention was to complete a pass that would set us up for a field goal before time ran out. If we had completed that deep in-breaking route, it would have worked out according to our plan,” McVay said. “Our goal was to kick a field goal once we were within field goal position and then attempt an onside kick, giving us a real chance to win the game.
“By the time it came down to it, I didn’t expect us to hit that long in-cut to Puka (Nacua), so we decided to go ahead and kick the field goal. I felt it was an opportunity to avoid putting Matthew (Stafford) in a position where he had to throw a Hail Mary pass and instead rely on our field goal unit. Initially, our strategy was to get into field goal range earlier with some of our play selection and then have a chance at an onside kick to tie or win the game,” he explained.
