Fiat has made a surprising comeback with the reintroduction of the Fiat 600. However, this time around, it’s not what you might expect. Fiat has added a new 600e compact SUV to its electric car lineup, offering a range of over 250 miles on a single charge. The 600e marks the return of the long-lost Fiat 600 nameplate, which was first introduced 68 years ago. This new electric compact SUV may confuse those who remember the original 600 models. The original Fiat 600 was a rear-engine, water-cooled city car that aimed to cater to the masses. Later on, Fiat also introduced the 600 Multipla, a budget-friendly four-door mini people carrier designed for families. However, the new 600e doesn’t resemble either of the previous 600 models.
Instead, Fiat has taken advantage of the growing popularity of small SUVs by creating a jacked-up hatchback aimed at both city lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. The 600e is similar in size and style to the outgoing combustion-engined 500X SUV. Despite the similarities, Fiat considers this an all-new model, embodying the brand’s values of Italian style and sustainability. It shares the same platform as other brands under the Stellantis automotive group, such as the DS3 E-Tense, Peugeot e-2008, Vauxhall Mokka Electric, and upcoming Jeep Avenger SUV.
The latest battery car from Fiat claims to comfortably seat five people and offers an inner-city range of over 372 miles, though the range drops to around 250 miles when driven on a mixture of roads. It is powered by 54kWh lithium-ion batteries and an 115kW electric motor that drives the front wheels only. The combination allows for 0-to-62mph acceleration in nine seconds and a top speed of 93mph. Additionally, the 600e comes equipped with a 100kW fast charger system, enabling quick charging times, with the battery reaching 80% charge in less than half an hour. Alternatively, a home charger with an 11kW onboard charger can fully charge the battery in under six hours.
UK customers can expect the order books for the 600e to open in the autumn, with deliveries estimated to begin before the end of 2024. However, Fiat has yet to announce the pricing and specifications for the UK market. The 600e is considered the “bigger sister” of the Fiat 500e, reflecting the same coolness and fresh style. While pricing details are still under wraps, we anticipate the 600e to have a starting price of approximately £37,000.
