A Word of Caution for Those Visiting California’s Beaches

As the Fourth of July approaches and Americans head to the shores, Southern Californians are being warned about potentially aggressive sea lions. According to Dr. Alissa Deming of the Pacific Marine Mammal Center, sea lions and common dolphins are washing ashore in a state of confusion and experiencing seizures. This is all due to toxic algae blooms floating off the coast. A recent report from CNN indicates that over 100 sea lions have already been affected by the neurotoxin domoic acid, which is present in the algae blooms.

Dr. Deming explains that sea lions and dolphins consume smaller creatures in the food chain, such as anchovies and sardines, which have the toxin concentrated in their bodies from consuming algae-devouring plankton. The Marine Mammal Care Center Los Angeles has noted that sea lions affected by the toxin often display unusual side-to-side head movements and can appear lethargic or aggressive. Beachgoers and surfers have already reported being bitten or attacked by sea lions in Los Angeles and Orange counties, as reported by Axios. Additionally, numerous sick sea lions and dolphins have been found further north in Santa Barbara and Ventura counties.

Officials in Southern California are advising people to keep a distance of at least 50 feet from any animal on the shore and refrain from taking selfies. If anyone spots a distressed marine animal, they are encouraged to contact the professionals. Two organizations to reach out to are the MMCC at 800-39-WHALE (94253) and the California Wildlife Center at 310-458-WILD (9453) for those in Malibu. If bitten by a sea lion affected by the algae bloom, there is no need to worry about the neurotoxin transmitting to the body. However, it is still recommended to see a doctor immediately in case of potential bacterial infection from the sea lion. (Read more sea lion stories.)
