Get ready for some major spoilers! In season two, episode two of “Our Flag Means Death,” the fate of the central character Lucius is finally revealed after seeming to die at the end of season one. Creator David Jenkins recently spoke to Insider about the shocking twist.
The hit series, loosely based on historical figures, follows a disastrous pirate crew led by Stede Bonnet (played by Rhys Darby) as they encounter the famous pirate Blackbeard (played by Taika Waititi). However, in this fictional retelling, Blackbeard and Stede fall in love.
Lucius, portrayed by Nathan Foad, was the heart of the crew in season one, guiding Blackbeard and Stede through their relationship. However, in the season finale, Lucius is pushed off the ship and seemingly killed by a heartbroken Blackbeard, who returns to his dark ways after being rejected by Stede.
After over a year of anticipation, fans finally discover in season two, episode two that Lucius did survive. Stede and his crew stumble upon Lucius on another pirate ship, but his near-death experience has left him scarred and resentful towards his former captain.
In a pre-season two premiere interview, show creator David Jenkins revealed that Lucius’ “death” was intended to be a fake-out and expressed his hope that fans would enjoy the twist. Jenkins also praised Nathan Foad’s performance, stating, “You can’t kill off Nathan Foad! He’s fantastic. I never intended to kill Lucius. He’s the best. But I liked that the character faced a violent fate after being so kind to Blackbeard.”
Continuing on the changes in Lucius, Jenkins shared, “To have him come back and be a little damaged and resemble an ‘angry young man’ version of Lucius was fun to play with. And I think Nathan had fun playing that.”
When Lucius reappears, he has developed a smoking habit and exhibits a rougher attitude towards others, showcasing a transformed persona. Jenkins described it as having “a little James Dean thing.”
