Unveiling Behind-the-Scenes at Met Éireann: Engaging Free Guided Tours for Dubliners

As part of this year’s Open House Dublin programme, guided tours are available for some of the capital’s most unique and interesting buildings. The free festival of architecture will be held from October 7 to 15, with events taking place across the entire city and county of Dublin.

One of the buildings on display this year is the home of Met Éireann in Glasnevin. Designed by renowned Irish architect Liam McCormick, the building features an unconventional pyramid shape and numerous windows to offer the best possible view of the sky.

For the first time, all four Dublin local authorities are participating in Open House Dublin, including Dublin City, Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown, Fingal, and South Dublin, which is new for this year.

The 2023 programme showcases over 150 buildings and spaces that are free for everyone to visit in October. The lineup includes walking tours, boat tours, exhibitions, films, podcasts, lectures, workshops, and more.

Emmett Scanlon, Director of the Irish Architecture Foundation, describes architecture festivals as extraordinary moments of focus and delight, where shared experiences are told through stories that connect people and place. He hopes that more people than ever will participate in Open House Dublin this year, as it provides an opportunity to explore the heart of Dublin and what truly matters.

This year, the festival will begin with a dedicated weekend for children and families on October 7 and 8, followed by a wider range of tours and events from October 13 to 15.

Minister Malcolm Noonan commends the Irish Architecture Foundation for introducing exciting new elements to this year’s Open House Dublin programme. He believes that the festival offers a wonderful opportunity for people to engage with various aspects and inspiring ideas related to the built environment of Dublin.

Some of the highlights of this year’s events include a unique look inside the former Odlums Flour Mills at Dublin Port, which is being developed as an artists’ campus and workspace. The Kilmainham Mills complex, recently conserved by Dublin City Council, will also be open to the public as a community and cultural hub. Other events include tours of historical landmarks such as Swords Castle, Carnegie Library, Malahide Castle, Ardgillan Castle’s restored glasshouses, and more.

Open House Dublin also offers guided family tours of prominent sites such as Farmleigh House, the Museum of Literature Ireland, Rathfarnham Castle, the National Library of Ireland, the National Museum of Ireland, Casino Marino, and the Old Library at Trinity College Dublin.

All events during Open House Dublin are free, but some require pre-booking, which begins on September 14 at 9 am. For more information, visit OpenHouseDublin.com.
