A recent study conducted by the European Respiratory Society suggests that bacteria-containing dust found at day care centers may increase the risk of asthma in children. The study involved collecting dust samples from 103 different day care facilities in Paris, France, and analyzing them in a lab to identify the bacteria present.
Researchers also surveyed the parents of 515 children to determine if their children experienced any wheezing or respiratory issues. The results showed that one type of bacteria, which included Streptococcus and Lactococcus, was associated with a higher risk of wheezing, a common precursor to asthma in children under 3 years old.
Dr. Annabelle Bédard, a researcher at Inserm in Paris, France, presented the findings at the European Respiratory Society International Congress in Milan, Italy. She highlighted the importance of understanding the factors that influence the bacterial community in day care centers, such as cleaning and ventilation practices, and indoor air quality.
Dr. Steven Abelowitz, a pediatrician who reviewed the study findings, emphasized the need for further research on these complex bacteria types and their impact on children’s respiratory health. He recommended keeping day care facility rooms clean and well-ventilated to minimize the risk of wheezing and lung issues in children.
As more studies are conducted, the goal is to improve conditions at day care centers and develop effective strategies for preventing chronic respiratory diseases like asthma in children.
