Unrecognized STI Impacts Approximately 500,000 Individuals in the UK – Remain Unaware to Over Four in Five

  • Mgen: The Hidden STI Impacting Half a Million Britons
  • Only 15% of Britons have heard of this sexually transmitted infection

A recent survey suggests that only 15% of Britons are aware of a sexually transmitted infection (STI) known as Mycoplasma genitalium (Mgen), which affects approximately 500,000 people in the UK.

Mgen is caused by a bacterium that infects the urinary and genital tracts of both men and women through sexual intercourse. It is estimated that between 1-2% of Britons aged 16 to 44 are affected by this STI.

Symptoms of Mgen in women include pain during urination, itching, and post-coital bleeding. If left untreated, it can lead to fertility problems. However, a survey conducted by Lloyds Pharmacy revealed that 90% of respondents were not confident in identifying the symptoms of Mgen, despite only 15% having heard of it.

Dr. Neel Patel, a GP for Lloyds Pharmacy, explains that testing for Mgen is not routine at STI clinics and is typically only conducted if individuals have symptoms or express concerns. While 80% of men and 50% of women may not exhibit symptoms, they can still request a test if they suspect they have been exposed to the infection through a partner.
