The NFL season kicks off on Thursday night with the reigning Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs hosting the Detroit Lions on NBC and its Peacock app.

Gone are the days when NFL games were shown on one or two networks. This season, the league is broadcasting more games across various platforms, including broadcast networks, cable, and digital streaming platforms, and offering more games exclusively on streaming platforms.

NBC, Fox, CBS, ESPN/ABC, Amazon, the NFL’s streaming app, and YouTube TV will all broadcast NFL games this year, while the NFL’s streaming app and YouTube TV will also stream some games exclusively.

The abundance of different channels and streaming services available to watch the NFL is a result of the league’s increased value in television, especially as the media and tech industries go through turmoil and more people cancel their pay-TV subscriptions. The NFL recently signed media deals worth over $100 billion to secure broadcast and streaming rights for more games.

CBS, ESPN, ABC, and NBC have invested billions of dollars into their streaming services, considering them the future of their businesses. They are now showcasing more NFL games, including exclusive games, on their platforms to attract new subscribers.

Traditional broadcast and cable television viewership is declining rapidly, with the NFL being the main attraction that keeps the pay-TV bundle intact, according to media analysts.

Last season, people were able to stream three out of the five NFL game packages.

This season, there will be several firsts, including the availability of NFL Sunday Ticket on YouTube, a streaming-only playoff game on Peacock, and Amazon Prime Video’s Black Friday game.

ESPN+ will exclusively air an international NFL game on its platform for the second time later this year, while Amazon continues to hold exclusive rights to Thursday night games, making it the first platform to exclusively stream an NFL package.

Football is still one of the rare live events that attract millions of viewers, and advertisers are willing to pay a premium as traditional TV viewership for non-sports content continues to decline.

Last season, the NFL accounted for over half of Fox’s viewership and about one-third of CBS and NBC’s viewership, according to a report by MoffettNathanson.

According to analysts, the NFL is the main driver of network ratings and advertising revenue during the fall TV season. It remains an outlier compared to other linear content.

NBC will show “Sunday Night Football” on primetime TV and Peacock, Fox will broadcast National Football Conference games, CBS will air American Football Conference games on its network and Paramount+, ESPN will broadcast “Monday Night Football” games on ESPN and ESPN+, and Amazon will stream Thursday night games exclusively on Amazon Prime Video.
