Report: Uncertainty Over Retirement Terms Delays Stephen Strasburg’s Nationals Ceremony

Last month, pitcher Stephen Strasburg’s retirement ceremony was in the works after multiple injuries and thoracic outlet syndrome ended his playing career. However, recent reports suggest that the ceremony has been canceled due to uncertainties surrounding the terms of his contract.

Strasburg is technically still under contract for the next three years and has not officially retired. According to The Washington Post, the Nationals had initially planned to honor him despite his retirement but decided against it with the contract issues.

Strasburg’s retirement comes after he signed a record-breaking seven-year, $245 million contract in December 2019, becoming the highest-paid pitcher at the time. However, his career was plagued by injuries, and he made only eight starts following the deal. This included two starts in 2020, five in 2021, and one in the previous year.

Strasburg’s retirement reportedly stems from “severe nerve damage” that caused numbness in his right hand. Typically, when a player retires while under contract, they forfeit the remaining money owed to them. However, The Athletic revealed that the Nationals had initially approached Strasburg with an offer to retire and still receive his full contract. The organization is now seeking to modify the terms of the agreement.

Strasburg’s current contract extends until 2026, although $80 million is deferred. According to Spotrac, he was set to receive $26.6 million annually from 2027 to 2029.
