Unlocking the Secrets of the WGA’s Game-Changing Hollywood Studio Deal – Everything You Need to Know!

After nearly five months, Hollywood’s writers can finally put their pens to paper as their strike against industry studios comes to an end.

The Writer’s Guild of America West (WGAW) announced the end of their walkout at 12:01am Pacific Time on Wednesday (Sept. 27) after their leadership unanimously agreed to an “exceptional” new deal. Now, the remaining step is for the WGAW’s 11,500 members to ratify the contract.

The union has published a summary (pdf) of the agreement with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) on its website. The deal, which will be extended until May 1, 2026, includes increased pay, limitations on AI usage, and improved residuals from streaming, which the WGA negotiations committee considers a victorious outcome from their talks.

Here are the details of what Hollywood writers have fought for and are expected to secure with their votes.

Writers secure protections against AI use

🤖 Under the Minimum Basic Agreement (MBA), AI is not allowed to “write or rewrite literary material,” meaning writers cannot be replaced by AI technology.

🤖 AI-generated writing cannot be considered “source material,” and writers cannot be compelled to use AI for their work. However, they have the option to use AI with the company’s consent and in accordance with its policies on privacy, security, and intellectual property rights.
