Unlocking the Potential: How Middle-aged Women Can Prioritize Self-care, Hobbies, and Personal Needs with Less than Five Hours a Week

  • The findings come from a survey of more than 1,300 middle-aged women

Middle-aged women spend less than five hours a week on their own needs, self-care, and hobbies, according to a survey of over 1,300 women.

The findings revealed that the majority of women over 40, known as the ‘sandwich generation,’ have very little time for themselves.

Katie Taylor, a menopause campaigner and founder of the online community for middle-aged women called the Latte Lounge, conducted the survey.

Out of the 1,309 middle-aged women who participated in the survey, 70% admitted to spending less than five hours a week on their personal needs, self-care, and hobbies. This equates to less than one hour per day.

The same amount of women also reported spending less than three hours a week socializing with friends or partners.

One woman stated, “The emotional tug of war for scraps of me-time is overwhelming, and you feel like you’re constantly failing someone you love.”

Another woman expressed, “It’s a pressure pot between work, an ageing and recently widowed parent, two children under five, and everything else. Like many, my own needs just have to come last.”

Participants described their generation as the one that “does it all,” but also acknowledged the increasing difficulty of finding time for rest, relaxation, and joy while dealing with the challenges associated with menopause transition.

The survey was released ahead of the Midlife Festival, an online week-long event focusing on women’s health and wellbeing, scheduled for October 9-13.

Katie Taylor, the festival’s founder, emphasized the importance of women in the “sandwich generation” prioritizing self-care. She stated, “It’s critical for
