Shakira discusses her life post-split with Gerard Piqué in an interview with Billboard.
The singer openly reflects on the challenges of balancing her music career with being a single mother to two children. Even though her music career is flourishing, Shakira finds it difficult to answer when asked if she’s happy.
“It’s a simple question that requires a complex answer,” states Shakira. “I believe happiness is not easily attainable for everyone. It’s a privilege reserved for a select few, and at this moment, I can’t say I’m part of that group.”
This month, Shakira became the first South American artist to receive the Video Vanguard Award at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards, as reported by E Online.
She is also among the top nominees for the upcoming 2023 Latin Grammy Awards, according to E Online.
While Shakira admits that she pours her emotions into her music and has even broken numerous Guinness World Records along the way, she acknowledges that nothing can make up for the pain of a broken family.
“Of course, I have to keep going for the sake of my children. That’s my biggest motivation,” Shakira tells Billboard. “But my ultimate dream, beyond achieving platinum albums and Grammys, was to raise my sons with their father, facing challenges together and growing old side by side. Unfortunately, that’s not my reality anymore.”
Despite the emotional toll of the past year, Shakira believes that there will be silver linings she can depend on.
“In return, my music has taken flight in new directions, and I suppose that’s how life finds balance. You lose something on one end and gain something on the other. It’s pure mathematics,” explains Shakira. “In my next chapter of life, I’ll reveal the sum total.”
