Unlock Kate’s Mesmerizing ‘Mermaid’ Hair – The Ultimate Guide!

Mermaid hair has been a popular trend on social media for quite some time now. These long, undulating waves were once seen as something only twenty-somethings could pull off. However, the Princess of Wales has now shown us what can only be described as a more grown-up version of mermaid hair, and it has inspired many to consider trying this style in midlife.

We spoke to celebrity hairdresser Richard Ward (richardward.com), who has worked with Kate in the past, to find out the secrets behind her glossy mermaid hair and how to recreate it.

According to Richard, this style is achieved through a “curtain fringe,” which is one of the most flattering options available. It involves a center part with long, graduated layers that frame the face. The length of the hair also allows for versatility, as it can be parted on the side as well.

Kate’s stunning hair color enhances the beautiful waves. Richard explains that dark hair reflects light more than blonde hair, giving it a shiny and healthy appearance when it’s in great condition. The autumnal base color, broken up with caramel and honey tones, adds warmth and flattery to the overall look.

Achieving this hairstyle is not just about the cut and color. Healthy, hydrated hair is essential, and Richard recommends investing in quality shampoos, conditioners, and hair masks. While brands like Oribe and Shu Uemura are recommended, even opting for a mid-range product can make a noticeable difference.

However, the style itself requires time and effort. Richard cautions against rushing the process. Blow-drying the hair sleek and smooth is the first step, followed by using a round brush to eliminate frizz and curl. This sets the foundation for the mermaid waves.

To achieve the mermaid waves, Richard recommends spritzing each section with a heat-resistant holding spray and using a medium-sized curling tong to wrap the hair away from the face. The key is to leave a long, straight section before the wave, and wrapping it loosely around the tong about three times.

Once you have the desired waves, Richard suggests using your fingers to wrap each section and pin it to the scalp. Letting the hair cool in this position will help the waves last longer. After a sufficient cooling time, remove the pins and use a wide-toothed comb to blend the sections together. A light mist of hairspray will help set the style.

Lastly, brush the curtain fringe forward and curl the ends away from the face. Comb through the entire hairstyle with a wide-toothed comb for a seamless look. Finish with a light application of hairspray, and you’ll have gorgeous grown-up mermaid waves like Kate.
