HANGZHOU, China – The Gilas Pilipinas Women are ready to make their long-awaited debut in the Asian Games, with their eyes set on making history. Their first opponent on the continental stage is Kazakhstan, a formidable team that has reached the quarterfinal in the last two editions of the Games. The match will take place at SX Olympic Stadium at 5:30 p.m.

Gilas Women’s coach, Pat Aquino, emphasizes the importance of the players staying focused and not letting their emotions overwhelm them. Aquino has been instrumental in the team’s success, leading them to Division A of the FIBA Asia Cup and securing back-to-back gold medals at the Southeast Asian Games.

“The girls are excited and ready for their first Asian Games,” says Aquino. “But we have to stay mentally and physically focused.”

The team will look to veterans Jack Animam and Afril Bernardino to lead the charge. The rest of the Philippine women’s team includes Janine Pontejos, Chack Cabinbin, Louna Ozar, Khate Castillo, Katrina Guytingco, Stefanie Berberabe, Mikka Cacho, Monique Del Carmen, Andra Tongco, and Camille Nolasco.

Gilas Women are in Group B, alongside Kazakhstan, Hong Kong, and two-time Asiad gold medalist Japan.

Facing a taller Kazakh team, Aquino acknowledges that the team will have to rely on their quickness and outside shooting. “We need a strong start and control the tempo of the game. They have a height advantage, so we must utilize our speed and determination,” added Aquino.
