University student David Spriegel made a remarkable discovery during his second week of a summer internship.

The 21-year-old, who recently completed his junior year at St. Mary’s University in Minnesota, was organizing old papers at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum in Springfield, Illinois when he spotted a previously overlooked inscription.

The inscription read: ‘The above memorandum is in the inscription of Abraham Lincoln. — M. Hay’.

The 167-year-old documents are handwritten memos detailing land transactions in Springfield during Lincoln’s time as a lawyer. The intended recipient, Milton Hay, a clerk in the Stuart and Lincoln office, would have recognized his handwriting.

Experts have confirmed the authenticity of these documents, which will now join the museum’s collection of over 1,800 original manuscripts by the president.

Memorabilia related to the 16th president of the United States, Abraham Lincoln, can fetch high prices, and even items associated with Lincoln’s dog Fido are sought after by enthusiasts.

Lincoln, the first Republican president, was assassinated on April 15, 1865. A spokesperson for the museum stated that such a find is highly unusual, especially for an inexperienced intern like Spriegel. The spokesperson added that usually, these discoveries are made by experienced researchers with many years of experience.
