Unearthing Justice: Arrest Made After 39 Years in the Tragic Case of ‘Baby Mary’

In a mysterious incident that took place almost forty years ago, two young boys made a shocking discovery on Christmas Eve in 1984. They stumbled upon the lifeless body of a newborn baby in a secluded area of New Jersey’s Mendham Township, wrapped in a towel and placed inside a plastic bag, with the umbilical cord still attached. This heart-wrenching case became known as the “Baby Mary” case. However, recent developments have shed light on this long-standing mystery, according to CNN. The prosecutor’s office has revealed that advanced technology, effective collaboration between law enforcement agencies in three states, and meticulous police work have finally led to the identification of the baby’s mother. For legal reasons, the mother, who was only 17 years old in 1984, will not be publicly named, as reported by CBS News.

The mother of Baby Mary now faces charges of manslaughter, after being initially brought to the attention of authorities through a juvenile delinquent complaint filed in April. The medical examiner’s findings indicate that the infant was alive at birth and during abandonment, but sadly passed away within 24 hours. There is no evidence to suggest that the baby’s father, who was 19 when the child was born and passed away in 2009, was aware of the mother’s pregnancy or the birth of the baby. The Morris County prosecutor expresses deep sadness over the tragic loss of this baby girl, emphasizing that even after nearly four decades, the heartbreak remains the same. Every Christmas Eve for the past 35 years, a commemoration has been held at the child’s gravesite. (Read more New Jersey stories.)
