China Acknowledged as a Valuable Partner, says Minister, Dismissing Spy Claims

Kemi Badenoch, the Business and Trade Secretary, emphasized that the UK should not label China as a “foe” despite the recent arrest of a parliamentary researcher on suspicion of spying for China. During an interview on Sky News, she was asked whether China should be seen as a friend or enemy of Britain. In response, she highlighted China’s economic significance and its role on the UN Security Council, stating that “we certainly should not be describing China as a foe but we can describe it as a challenge.”

Badenoch expressed the need for careful language when discussing other countries and stressed the importance of direct engagement with Chinese officials. She mentioned that Prime Minister Sunak recently expressed his concerns to the Chinese premier during a face-to-face meeting, demonstrating the impact of such engagements.

At the G20 summit in India, Sunak confronted Chinese premier Li Qiang over what he described as “unacceptable” interference in the UK’s democracy. The arrest of the parliamentary researcher, which occurred in March but was only disclosed recently, has put pressure on Sunak from fellow Tory MPs to categorize China as a “threat” rather than a “challenge.”
