Senior medics’ basic pay ranges from £93,666 to £126,281 per year, depending on experience, following the recent 6% pay increase. However, consultants have the opportunity to increase their earnings through additional shifts, private work, and awards. On average, full-time consultants earn £127,000 per year, surpassing the basic pay figures. Health authorities estimate that after the pay rise, the average consultant will earn £134,000 annually. In addition to their high salaries, they can retire at 65 and receive a pension of £78,000 per year for life.

Junior doctors:

Junior doctors in training receive a salary of up to £63,152 per year, depending on their level of experience, during their five to ten years of training. Nurses, midwives, and paramedics:

The salaries of nursing, midwifery, and paramedic professionals in the NHS are determined by the Agenda for Change (AfC) contract system. These staff members received a 5% pay rise this year, amounting to an extra £1,065. Newly qualified nurses, midwives, and paramedics typically start on a minimum annual salary of £28,407. With overtime included, nurses across all experience levels earned an average of £37,000 in the year to March 2023. The equivalent figures for midwives and ambulance staff (including paramedics) were £36,000 and £47,000, respectively. This year, these figures will increase further due to the new pay rises.

Hospital porters and cleaners:

Similarly to nurses, midwives, and paramedics, hospital porters and cleaners are employed under the AfC contract, but their pay scale is lower.
