UN states that HIV/AIDS can be eradicated by 2030 if countries implement appropriate measures.

The United Nations announced on Thursday that ending the AIDS epidemic by 2030 is feasible, but it requires countries to show political determination by investing in prevention and treatment and implementing non-discriminatory legislation. As of 2022, approximately 39 million individuals worldwide were living with HIV, which can escalate into AIDS without treatment, according to UNAIDS.

UNAIDS stated in a recently published report that the solution lies in following the lead of countries that have demonstrated strong political commitments to prioritize their people’s well-being and support evidence-based HIV prevention and treatment programs. Additionally, an effective response to HIV necessitates the adoption of non-discriminatory laws and the empowerment of community networks. Sadly, in many countries, individuals living with HIV or AIDS face stigmatization, discrimination, and violence.

The report also highlighted that HIV infections have declined in recent years, particularly in regions with substantial financial investments like eastern and southern Africa, where new infections have decreased by 57% since 2010. However, there has been a significant rise in new infections in eastern Europe, central Asia, the Middle East, and North Africa. The main reasons behind these trends are the lack of HIV prevention services for marginalized and key populations and the obstacles posed by punitive laws and social discrimination.

In 2022 alone, 1.3 million people contracted HIV, and 630,000 died due to AIDS-related illnesses, as reported by UNAIDS. It is crucial to address this ongoing health crisis by implementing effective prevention and treatment strategies and eradicating the barriers that hinder progress.
