Advice for Traveling Amidst Train Strikes

During the strike days, National Rail warns passengers to expect “significant disruption.” Services may be delayed or even start later on the day immediately after the strikes.

To make traveling easier, National Rail provides the following recommendations:

  • Use the Journey Planner tool, checking close to the time of each strike date.
  • Stay updated with the Live Trains page for the most up-to-date information about arrivals and departures.
  • Plan your journey ahead and check for any changes, especially if you’re traveling on the first and last trains during the strike days.

Train Station Ticket Office Closures

According to the Rail Delivery Group (RDG), almost all railway station ticket offices will be closed, with staff being moved to platform and concourse duties. Ticket office facilities will remain open only at the busiest stations.

Passengers will be notified about potential closures through posters displayed at stations. The final decision on which offices will be closed will be made by the Government after a consultation. The closure program is expected to last for three years.

Understanding the Reasons Behind the Aslef Strikes

The Aslef members are undertaking industrial action to demand a pay raise.

The union has criticized the government for failing to meet their negotiating team, including general secretary Mick Whelan, assistant general secretary Simon Weller, and executive committee president Dave Calfe.

The last meeting between the union representatives and the employers, the Rail Delivery Group, took place in April, following the post-pandemic framework set by the Rail Industry Recovery Group.

Mr. Whelan expressed his frustration, saying, “Do you remember Where’s Wally? Well, what we want to know is Where’s Harper? We last saw the Secretary of State for Transport in December. We last saw Huw Merriman, the Rail Minister, in January. And we last saw the train companies in April. Since then, nothing. Nada. Zilch. Not a letter, not an email, not a text message, not a phone call, not a WhatsApp. Not a word!”
