Ukrainians in the US Granted Extended Temporary Legal Status by Biden Administration

The Biden administration has recently unveiled an extension and expansion of temporary legal status for Ukrainians already residing in the United States. The reasoning behind this decision is the ongoing military invasion by Russia in Ukraine, which has resulted in a humanitarian crisis, making it unsafe for Ukrainians to return to their country.

This expansion will grant an additional 166,700 individuals eligibility for Temporary Protected Status (TPS). In addition, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has allowed the 26,000 beneficiaries currently under TPS to retain their status until April 19, 2025.

In a statement, DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas emphasized the necessity of offering safety and protection to Ukrainians amidst the ongoing crisis caused by Russia’s military invasion. He expressed the administration’s commitment to providing temporary humanitarian relief to Ukrainian nationals.

The expiration date for TPS was originally set for October 19, but it has now been extended for 18 months.

Following Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022, the Biden administration initially granted TPS to Ukrainians. However, the conflict shows no signs of resolution as it approaches its 18-month mark.

In a counteroffensive launched in June, Ukrainian forces faced challenges in reclaiming territory from the entrenched Russian defensive positions. While they had previously succeeded in regaining control of significant areas in the fall of 2022, progress has been slower in their recent efforts.

According to the United Nations, over 6.2 million Ukrainians have registered as refugees in Europe, with an estimated 5.1 million internally displaced within their own country.
