Ukraine Set to Appoint New Defense Minister

Ukraine’s defense minister is set to be replaced as part of President Volodymyr Zelensky’s efforts to implement new approaches and improve interaction with the military and society. If approved by parliament, Oleksii Reznikov will be succeeded by Rustem Umerov, a former legislator. The change comes amidst Ukraine’s ongoing counteroffensive against Russia’s invasion, which has been progressing slowly.

In another development, Ukrainian officials reported a drone attack on a port in the Odessa region. The air force successfully shot down the majority of the drones, which were of Iranian origin. The attack is believed to be part of Russia’s plan to instigate a food crisis and hunger worldwide. Russian President Vladimir Putin is set to discuss the revival of food shipments from Ukraine under the Black Sea grain agreement with Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Regarding the incoming defense minister, Umerov, a member of the opposition Holos party, has experience in prisoner exchanges and has worked on resolving issues related to political prisoners, children, and civilians. While Reznikov, the outgoing defense minister, has been actively involved in advocating for military equipment shipments to Ukraine’s Western allies, the defense ministry has faced controversies related to procurement scandals. Reznikov’s deputy had already resigned earlier this year. He had indicated that he would likely accept another position if offered by President Zelensky.
