Ukraine Employing Drone Attacks to Confront Russia in the War

Ukraine’s drone attacks on Moscow have intensified as they aim to engage Russia and increase domestic pressure on the Kremlin. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky acknowledged this shift in a recent speech, highlighting a drone attack that damaged a Moscow skyscraper. Although Kyiv has not taken credit for all the attacks, it hopes that targeted strikes will create confusion and division within Russia as Ukraine confronts Moscow’s invading forces. The goal is to demonstrate to Russian elites the cost of Putin’s actions. The recent drone strikes in Moscow, which began in May, have mainly targeted military sites and business districts. While there have been injuries, significant casualties have not been reported. However, these attacks have sparked panic among Russian oligarchs.

Ukraine is likely relying on a network of saboteur agents already operating within Russia to carry out the drone attacks. These agents seem to be using Beaver kamikaze drones, which have a range of at least 600 miles. The drone strikes are not limited to Moscow and have also occurred in Russian regions bordering Ukraine, the Crimean Peninsula, and on Russian ships in the Black Sea.

As Ukraine escalates its attacks, Russia will likely intensify efforts to dismantle the shadowy networks responsible for them. However, history shows that dismantling such networks can be challenging. There is also concern that Ukraine’s use of drone strikes may erode its moral high ground against Russia, potentially pushing Western allies toward negotiations between the two countries. Ukraine argues that its responsive attacks on Russian soil are acts of self-defense in response to frequent missile strikes on Ukrainian territory.

Washington has notably avoided discussing the drone attacks inside Russia. When questioned about them, Pentagon spokesperson Brig. Gen. Pat Ryder focused on providing security assistance to Ukraine within its sovereign borders.

Ultimately, Ukraine believes that in this war for the survival of their nation and people, they must do what they consider necessary to continue their fight. The moral argument holds little weight when compared to the actions of Russia in the conflict.
