Ukraine Announces Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Plant’s Transition to Reserve Power Line

Ukraine’s Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant experienced another loss of connection to its main external power line during the night and had to switch to a reserve line, according to state-owned power generating company Energoatom on Thursday.

Energoatom stated that Europe’s largest nuclear power plant was on the brink of a blackout as the reserve line had less than half the capacity of the main power line.

“Such a regime is challenging for the reactor plant, as its duration is limited by the project’s design and can result in the failure of the main equipment of the energy unit,” Energoatom explained on Telegram.

The Zaporizhzhia plant, which consists of six reactors, has been under the control of the Russian military since the early days of Moscow’s invasion in February 2022.

It has become one of the key points of conflict, with both sides blaming each other for shelling in the vicinity. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has been working to establish a safety mechanism to prevent accidents.

None of the plant’s six reactors generate electricity.

On a separate note, the Russian-installed administration of the station stated that the Number 4 reactor had been transitioned from a “hot” to a “cold” shutdown due to signs of a steam leak.

One of the six reactors needs to be in a “hot shutdown” state to generate steam for the plant’s own needs.

“Plant personnel discovered signs of leaks in the pipe section of steam generator No. 3,” the administration reported on Telegram. “Consideration is being given to transitioning power unit No. 6 to a ‘hot shutdown’ state to meet the steam auxiliary requirements of the Zaporizhzhia NPP.”
