UFT Suffers Yet Another Setback in Its Ongoing Conflict with Success Academy

On the first day of school, Monday, Success Academy in Rockaway Park celebrated their victory over the United Federation of Teachers by creating a joyful and festive atmosphere with smiles, music, and balloons. The charter network successfully dismissed the UFT’s attempt to hinder the education of predominantly minority charter school students using the courts. The parents were relieved as they had feared that their children would not have any schools to attend this fall. A Manhattan judge rejected the UFT’s request to block Success Academy from commencing classes for hundreds of students at PS 225 in Far Rockaway and the K495 high school complex on Monday. Success Academy benefits its students by starting the school year weeks earlier than regular public schools. Michael Mulgrew, alongside the UFT, shamelessly exploited the new class-size law to hinder the city Department of Education-approved colocation in the two partially vacant buildings. However, Judge Lyle Frank dismissed the union’s baseless claims, acknowledging that there is enough space in the buildings to accommodate all students without surpassing the new caps, which will not be applicable for a couple more years. Success Academy CEO Eva Moskowitz criticized the UFT, emphasizing that it is unfathomable for an educators union to block the education of children. This is just one of the many attempts by the UFT to obstruct Success Academy’s colocations, but the union persists with its harassment. Since the UFT plans to appeal, Success Academy should request that the appellate court requires the union to cover its court costs when they inevitably lose again. If the UFT truly prioritizes the well-being of the children, Mulgrew and his colleagues would encourage the Department of Education to adopt Success Academy’s successful practices, which have resulted in 80% of its students excelling at reading and 75% being proficient in math. However, it is the teachers union that is causing harm to the students and their families, utilizing their power for selfish adult motives at the expense of the children.
