June 22 (UPI) — The University of Connecticut has signed a six-year contract extension worth $32.1 million with men’s basketball coach Dan Hurley. The agreement comes just months after Hurley guided the Huskies to their national championship, solidifying their position among the elite programs in college basketball.

In a news release, Hurley expressed his gratitude to UConn President Radenka Maric, athletic director David Benedict, and the entire administration for their support. He also thanked his players and staff who played a crucial role in the team’s success.

“Coaching at the University of Connecticut is a tremendous honor, and we are determined to continue building on our accomplishments,” said Hurley.

The contract extension spans until 2029 and includes additional incentives based on performance. Hurley, 50, took charge of UConn in 2018 and has compiled an impressive record of 104 wins and 55 losses in his five seasons with the Huskies. He has led the team to three NCAA Tournament appearances during his tenure.

During the 2022-23 season, Hurley’s Huskies achieved a record of 31-8 and secured a No. 4 seed in the tournament. They triumphed over opponents like Iona, Saint Mary’s Arkansas, and Gonzaga to advance to the Final Four. The Huskies then defeated Miami in the national semifinal before clinching the national title with a convincing 76-59 victory over San Diego State on April 3, securing their fifth championship.

Prior to joining UConn, Hurley held coaching roles at Wagner and Rhode Island, achieving notable success at both institutions. He led Wagner to a 38-23 record during his tenure from 2010 to 2011. Later, as head coach of Rhode Island, Hurley attained a commendable 113-82 record in six seasons.

In total, Hurley boasts an overall record of 255 wins and 160 losses in his 13-year career as a college head coach.

“I am thrilled to have Dan Hurley leading our men’s basketball program,” stated athletic director David Benedict. “The remarkable work that he and his staff have done over the past five years in rebuilding our program speaks for itself. The Huskies’ return to the highest level of college basketball is a testament to their dedication and expertise.”

“UConn Nation is overjoyed to have Dan continuing to lead our program in the foreseeable future,” Benedict added.
