U.S. Continues Deporting Haitians Despite Encouraging Its Citizens to Evacuate – National

According to a spokesperson from the Department of Homeland Security, the United States will continue deporting Haitian migrants back to their country, even as gang violence worsens and the department urges its own citizens to evacuate. The Biden administration has expanded parole processes for Haitian migrants, but those encountered at sea will be immediately repatriated and those encountered in the United States without a legal basis will be subject to removal. Despite calls from the United Nations and human rights groups to stop this practice, deportations will continue.

U.S. border authorities have encountered over 125,000 Haitians between October and July, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection. This ongoing issue highlights the current crisis in Haiti.

On Thursday, a flight carrying 66 Haitian migrants landed at Toussaint Louverture International Airport in Port-au-Prince, while a small group gathered to board a U.S. charter airline Omni Air International plane heading to the U.S. from the same airport.

The escalating violence in Haiti has led to a deteriorating humanitarian situation, with over 2,500 deaths and 970 kidnappings since January, according to the UN Integrated Office in Haiti (BINUH). This includes at least 71 deaths in the recent weeks of August, resulting in the forced displacement of over 10,000 people.

In conclusion, the situation in Haiti remains critical, with ongoing deportations and a worsening security crisis. This poses challenges to both the United States and the international community as they navigate the complex issues surrounding migration and human rights.
