U.K. Claims Russia is Likely Training Dolphins in Crimea’s Occupied Peninsula to Counter Enemy Divers

The British military intelligence in London has reported that Russia is training combat dolphins in the annexed Crimea as part of their efforts to counter Ukrainian forces. According to the latest update from U.K. Defence Intelligence on the situation in Ukraine, the Russian Navy has heavily invested in security at their main base in Sevastopol, particularly in the Black Sea Fleet. This includes multiple layers of nets and booms at the harbor entrance, and recently, an increased number of trained marine mammals, most likely bottle-nosed dolphins.

It is believed that these combat dolphins are being trained to counter enemy divers. The Russian Navy has a history of using marine mammals, such as Beluga whales and seals, for various missions in Arctic waters. One notable incident involved a harness-wearing whale, known as Hvaldimir, which appeared in Norway in 2019 and reappeared off the coast of Sweden recently. The harness had the words “Equipment St. Petersburg” printed on it, leading to speculation about its alleged association with Russia.

Experts speculate that Hvaldimir’s behavior may be driven by a desire to mate or a longing for social interaction with other Beluga whales. The use of dolphins for military purposes is not unique to Russia – both the Soviet Union and the United States utilized dolphins during the Cold War to detect submarines, mines, and identify potential threats near harbors and ships. In fact, there were reports of dolphins being trained by the Soviet Union to plant explosive devices on enemy vessels.

In a similar vein, the U.S. Navy used sea lions for support operations in Bahrain after the 9/11 attacks. These sea lions were deployed as part of Operation Enduring Freedom and played a crucial role in maintaining security. The use of trained marine animals showcases the innovative and creative approaches employed by military forces around the world.
