Two Western Journalists Forced to Leave Russia

Russia’s crackdown on foreign reporters seems to have intensified, with Politico reporting that its Moscow correspondent, Eva Hartog, has been expelled from the country. The reason for her expulsion remains unclear, but Hartog, a Dutch citizen who has been reporting from Moscow for the past decade, was informed that her visa and media accreditation would not be renewed and that she had six days to leave. Jamil Anderlini, editor-in-chief of Politico Europe, expressed disappointment at these actions and expressed hope that Hartog would be allowed to return to Moscow soon.

Anderlini also mentioned the case of Evan Gershkovich from the Wall Street Journal, who is currently unjustly imprisoned in Russia for practicing fair and accurate journalism. Hartog had also worked for Dutch magazine De Groene Amsterdammer. In a recent column, she stated that the decision not to renew her visa was made by the “competent authorities,” a term often used to refer to the security services. According to international law, no reason or explanation was provided to her. She was given only six days to wrap up her life before leaving Russia.

Hartog, a former editor of the Moscow Times, a publication known for its critical stance towards the Kremlin, moved its headquarters to Amsterdam after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine last year. In addition to Hartog, Anna-Lena Lauren, the Russian correspondent for Sweden’s Dagens Nyheter and Finland’s Hufvudstadsblade, was also expelled from Russia this week. This development highlights the increasing restrictions on foreign journalists in the country.

By expelling foreign reporters, Russia is silencing voices of dissent and hindering the free flow of information. This move not only raises concerns about press freedom but also indicates a growing trend of suppressing independent journalism. It is crucial for the international community to condemn these actions and advocate for the release of unjustly imprisoned journalists like Gershkovich. Freedom of the press is a fundamental pillar of democracy and must be protected.
