Two Jet Ski Tourists Attacked off Algeria’s Coast

According to the BBC, two jet skiers from Morocco were tragically killed by Algerian troops after accidentally crossing the maritime border between the two nations. The incident occurred when the group of four men, who were on vacation, got lost and ran out of fuel. One survivor, identified as Mohamed Kissi, described how they knew they were in Algeria when a black Algerian dinghy approached and fired at them. Kissi’s brother and another man were fatally shot, while a third man was taken into custody. Kissi managed to escape and was rescued by the Moroccan coast guard.

It is important to note that Morocco and Algeria do not have diplomatic relations and their border has been closed since 1994, as reported by Al Jazeera. The group of men had departed from the coastal resort of Saidia in Morocco. Kissi, along with his brother, held dual French-Moroccan citizenship, and the French foreign ministry has confirmed at least one death in the incident. Kissi mentioned that they did not attempt to escape from the approaching Algerian dinghy, but instead tried to communicate with its occupants. Both the Algerian and Moroccan governments have yet to release official statements, and the investigation is still ongoing.
