Tunnel Flooding Tragically Claims 13 Lives in South Korea

Persistent heavy rain continues to pour down on South Korea, wreaking havoc and causing widespread destruction. This unrelenting storm is the most destructive of the year so far, claiming the lives of 40 people and injuring 34 more. In addition, over 10,000 residents have been forced to evacuate their homes since July 9. The central city of Cheongju has been particularly affected, as rescue workers, including divers, tirelessly search for survivors trapped in a muddy tunnel. Thirteen bodies have been recovered thus far, while nine individuals have been rescued and treated for injuries.

Rescue efforts are ongoing, with most of the water in the tunnel now pumped out. Rescuers are combing the area by foot after using rubber boats to transport bodies on stretchers. Emergency workers, soldiers, and police are also focused on the southeastern town of Yecheon, which has been devastated by landslides that have claimed the lives of at least nine individuals, with eight others still missing. Homes have been destroyed and roads have buckled, leaving the town in ruins.

Dramatic photos capture the tireless efforts of fire and police officers using search dogs to navigate through knee-high mud and debris. The extent of the damage is substantial, with nearly 200 homes and 150 roads damaged or destroyed across the country. Furthermore, 28,607 individuals have been left without electricity in the aftermath of this severe storm. The Ministry of the Interior and Safety has reported these alarming figures.
