Lawyers for Donald Trump may ask a New York appeals court to pause his ongoing $250 million business fraud trial and stay a judge’s order that could gut the former president’s company, lawyers said Thursday afternoon.

Trump’s attorney Christopher Kise told Manhattan Supreme Court Judge Arthur Engoron that he plans to seek a stay of the trial and a stay of the judge’s order related to dissolving Trump corporate entities. However, Kise did not disclose the full scope of the upcoming appeal, causing upset to a lawyer from the New York Attorney General’s Office.

The Attorney General’s lawyer, Andrew Amer, emphasized that his office is entitled to 24-hour advance notice of any appeal.

Attorney General Letitia James has filed a lawsuit alleging that Trump, his adult sons, the Trump Organization, and company executives misstated real estate values to obtain better loan terms and tax advantages, inflating Trump’s net worth as reflected in financial statements. The trial is currently addressing six remaining claims in the suit.

Judge Engoron previously issued a summary judgment in favor of James, finding that the defendants had committed business fraud. As part of this ruling, Engoron revoked the business certificates held by the defendants and ordered the appointment of an independent receiver to oversee the dissolution of these companies.

In a recent series of orders, Engoron cleared the way for the sale of the businesses and required the defendants to inform an independent monitor for the Trump Organization of any creation of new entities for acquiring or holding the assets of the dissolved businesses.

Trump was present in court for the initial 2½ days of the trial before leaving, expressing his frustration with the diversion from his presidential campaign. Although Trump was not required to attend those days of the trial, he may be called as a witness later on. The trial is expected to conclude in late December.
