Breaking News: Mets’ General Manager Resigns Following Major Front Office Shake-up?

In a surprising move, Billy Eppler has resigned from his position as the general manager of the New York Mets, according to an announcement made by the team on Thursday.

Eppler’s resignation comes just three days after the Mets introduced David Stearns as their new president of baseball operations. Stearns spent the past eight seasons with the Milwaukee Brewers.

“I wanted David to have a fresh start, and that meant stepping down,” Eppler stated. “I wish the entire Mets organization nothing but success.”

“Billy Eppler guided the team through a remarkable 101-win season and a postseason appearance last year, and he will be greatly missed,” stated Mets owner Steve Cohen in a press release via SNY. “Today, we accepted Billy’s resignation as he made the decision that it is in the best interest of everyone to hand over the leadership of Baseball Operations to David Stearns. On behalf of the Mets organization, we wish him the best of luck.”

Initially, it was anticipated that Eppler would continue working alongside Stearns in the Mets’ front office, but it appears that he had a change of heart.

Eppler joined the Mets in 2021 after serving as the general manager of the Los Angeles Angels, where he played a key role in signing Shohei Ohtani. Eppler’s connection to the two-way superstar, along with Cohen’s financial resources, had positioned the Mets as favorites to land Ohtani in free agency.
