Trump’s legal team holds meeting with federal prosecutors at special counsel’s office

Attorneys working on behalf of former President Donald Trump met with federal prosecutors from the special counsel’s office in Washington, D.C. on Thursday morning, in anticipation of a potential third criminal indictment related to the Jan. 6 probe. This investigation, led by special counsel Jack Smith and a grand jury, is focused on identifying any attempts to disrupt the peaceful transfer of power following the 2020 presidential election.

Recently, Trump revealed through social media that he had received a letter notifying him that he is a target of this investigation. The letter informed him of his right to appear before the grand jury within four days, however, Trump has declined this offer in his previous two indictments. The delivery of the target letter suggests that the investigation is in its final stages. The letter specifies three federal statutes that could be applicable to Trump: conspiracy to commit an offense or defraud the U.S., obstruction of an official proceeding and witness tampering, and a civil rights violation.

The potential indictment related to the Jan. 6 investigation follows a separate federal indictment in June, which focused on Trump’s handling of classified records. That trial is set to take place in May 2024. Furthermore, Trump also faces state criminal charges in New York concerning a payment made to adult film star Stormy Daniels in 2016. Another investigation by a special purpose grand jury in Fulton County, Georgia, into potential attempts by Trump and his allies to overturn the 2020 presidential election results in Georgia, recently concluded. Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis has announced that decisions on possible charges will be made this summer.
