Trump’s legal team deems request for rapid trial as ‘ridiculous’

Donald Trump’s legal team is pushing back against the US government’s call for a “speedy trial” regarding the charges accusing the former president of conspiring to undermine the 2020 election. In an attempt to delay the proceedings, John Lauro, one of Trump’s lawyers, rejected the idea of a court trial within a few months. Lauro argued that the Biden justice department had ample time to investigate the case and that it would be unjust to rush to trial in 90 days. He also raised concerns about Trump sitting in a courtroom instead of focusing on debating the issues against potential candidate Joe Biden in the upcoming presidential contest.

Lauro stated, “We’re entitled to understand what the charges are” and “do our own investigation.”

The Department of Justice will respond in court.

Special counsel Jack Smith, who led the investigation, detailed the charges against Trump. These charges include conspiring to defraud the United States, conspiring to disenfranchise voters, and conspiring and attempting to obstruct an official proceeding. Smith emphasized that the Department of Justice wants a speedy trial to test their evidence in court, referring to the defendant’s legal right to a trial, which should begin within 70 days of filing an indictment under federal statute.

Despite facing federal criminal charges related to classified documents and state charges concerning alleged hush money payments, Trump is still the clear frontrunner for the Republican presidential nomination. He has been seeking to postpone other legal proceedings until after the 2024 presidential election.

In response to his recent indictment, Trump expressed on his Truth Social network, “I have never had so much support on anything before.” He criticized the “unprecedented indictment of a former (highly successful!) president and the leading candidate, by far, in both the Republican party and the 2024 general election.”

According to the indictment, Trump and his co-conspirators allegedly arranged for fake representatives from seven states, including Pennsylvania and Georgia, to cast votes in the electoral college.

The new case brought by the Department of Justice is considered one of the most significant legal challenges Trump has faced. It is the second set of charges filed by special counsel Jack Smith, who was appointed by US attorney-general Merrick Garland to oversee investigations involving the former president.

Another legal obstacle awaits in Georgia, where a special grand jury has been investigating alleged interference by Trump and others in the 2020 polls. If district attorney Fani Willis decides to bring charges in the separate case, they are expected to materialize later in the summer.
