Trump Team Gears Up for December Trial: Facing Nearly Impossible Odds

In a previous argument, Donald Trump contended that he could not be investigated for crimes committed while he was president. However, he has now expanded this policy to include his time running for president. Trump’s lawyers have requested a delay of his trial in the Mar-a-Lago classified documents case until after the 2024 election. They argue that holding a trial during the campaign cycle would present challenges in the jury selection process and limit the ability to secure a fair and impartial adjudication.

Special counsel Jack Smith has already requested a trial delay, stating that more time is needed for preparation. Originally set for August, the trial may be pushed to December. However, Trump’s team believes that even that delay is insufficient, citing the extraordinary nature of the proceedings. They argue that a continuance would be in the best interest of justice, as other trials involving President Trump and defense counsel make it nearly impossible to adequately prepare for this trial by December.

Notably, Trump also faces a criminal trial in the Stormy Daniels hush-money case starting in March, a civil trial over defamation claims by E. Jean Carroll set for January, and a civil fraud trial in New York state beginning in October. Politico suggests that Trump’s strategy is to prolong legal matters in the hope that the legal landscape changes. However, this situation is unique, as Trump could potentially face years of imprisonment and become the first president ever prosecuted for a crime. Trump and his co-defendant, Walt Nauta, have pleaded not guilty to the charges. (Read more Mar-a-Lago indictment stories.)
