Trump Seeks to Stop Investigation Into Him by Georgia’s Highest Court

Donald Trump has taken his legal battle to the Georgia Supreme Court in an attempt to halt the investigation led by Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis. The former president’s lawyers filed a petition on Thursday seeking to disqualify Willis from the case and requesting the suppression of evidence gathered by a special-purpose grand jury, as well as its final report. This move comes after Trump’s lawyers previously asked Superior Court Judge Robert McBurney to take similar action, which is still pending.

The decision to turn to the state’s top court was made due to the delay in Judge McBurney’s ruling, according to the Washington Post. The court filing argues that the abnormal and prolonged nature of these proceedings can be attributed to the fact that Donald J. Trump is the petitioner. The district attorney’s office has not yet commented on the motion, but they have previously criticized similar attempts to disrupt the investigation. Willis has hinted that she may seek an indictment in the first two weeks of August. (Read more Donald Trump stories.)
