Tropical Storm Hilary Forces Closure of LAUSD Schools; Set to Reopen on Tuesday

The Los Angeles Unified School District campuses were closed on Monday due to the heavy rain caused by Tropical Storm Hilary. However, classes will resume as normal on Tuesday.

Superintendent Alberto Carvalho announced on Sunday afternoon that the decision to close campuses was made because the district couldn’t predict if the overnight conditions would cause damage to the schools or make it difficult for students and staff to reach campuses.

“Due to our inability to assess the buildings and determine access to schools, it is almost impossible for us to open,” Carvalho said during a Sunday afternoon news conference.

Carvalho mentioned that some LAUSD students start walking to school as early as 5:30 or 6 a.m., and some bus drivers report to work as early as 4:30 a.m. Additionally, many district employees live far away from their worksites.

On Monday morning, Carvalho defended the decision, stating that it was based on scientific data and current conditions.

According to Carvalho, crews assessed the campuses on Monday and found about two dozen with no phone or internet service. They also discovered one campus that experienced a minor mudslide and access issues in the Sun Valley area.

By late morning, phone and internet service were restored at the affected campuses. Cleanup work was also underway, according to the district.

Carvalho confirmed that schools will reopen on Tuesday following their normal schedules.

The majority of independent charter schools in the LAUSD area were also closed on Monday, with a few exceptions.

The district established 13 grab-and-go food distribution sites on Monday to provide students and families with three meals during the school closures.

Multiple other school districts, including several in the Santa Clarita Valley, canceled classes for Monday. This includes Antelope Valley Union High School District, Anaheim Union High School District, William S. Hart Union High School District, Castaic Union School District, Newhall School District, Saugus Union School District, and Sulphur Springs Union School District.

In Orange County, classes were canceled on Monday in the Anaheim Union High School District and Anaheim Elementary School District. Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana was also closed.

Cal State Fullerton canceled in-person classes for Monday, but online classes continued as usual. Cal State Long Beach switched to virtual operations on Monday and will resume in-person classes on Tuesday.
