FedEx Driver Dispatches Rattlesnake Following Package Delivery

A FedEx driver in Nebraska has received praise for his quick thinking and bravery after encountering a rattlesnake at a customer’s home.

While delivering a package in Dawson County, the driver, Matt Govier, noticed the venomous snake near the front steps of the house, as reported by ABC affiliate NTV.

Ring camera footage from the home, shared with NTV, captured the snake curled up by the front door just before Govier’s arrival.

Instead of fleeing, the thoughtful driver grabbed a shovel and a rake from the homeowner’s garage to kill the 36-inch-long prairie rattlesnake, according to NTV.

The prairie rattlesnake, capable of growing up to 5 feet long, is one of several rattlers found in the United States, according to the National Park Service.

After eliminating the intruding snake, Govier removed its body from the premises and promptly messaged the homeowner, Christie Jones, to inform her of the close encounter.

“I hope you didn’t have a pet rattlesnake at your front door because I killed him,” he wrote.

“Sorry about the blood,” Govier added.

According to a Facebook post by Jones, her 12-year-old daughter, Kyler, had walked out of the front door just minutes before the rattlesnake appeared.

Prairie rattlesnakes, known as ambush predators, locate their prey using thermosensitive pits on their heads. They excel at finding hidden spots in thick prairie grasses, waiting until their prey comes within striking distance.

“Anyone who really knows me knows how incredibly fearful I am of any kind of snake,” Jones said in her social media post on Aug. 11.

Jones expressed her gratitude for Govier’s courageous act, stating that she is “very thankful.” In her Facebook post, she praised him and suggested that he deserves to be named FedEx’s employee of the year for “taking care of business,” as confirmed to NTV.

The National Park Service advises people to give rattlesnakes “plenty of space and not handle them” in order to avoid being bitten.

“Bites are more likely to happen if you provoke or attempt to catch a rattlesnake,” warns the park service.
