A trial date has been confirmed for July 20th for Malik Daron Minnix, a 53-year-old convicted felon who allegedly shot his ex-girlfriend multiple times at her Eastvale residence before fleeing to Texas and evading capture for nearly two months.
Minnix, who resides in Eastvale, is facing charges of attempted murder, firearm assault, domestic violence, being a felon in possession of a gun, violating a domestic violence restraining order, and sentence-enhancing gun and great bodily injury allegations stemming from the alleged attack in 2020.
During a status hearing, Riverside County Superior Court Judge John Molloy discussed trial scheduling with the prosecution and defense, and both sides agreed to make the necessary arrangements to start the proceedings during the third week of July.
Minnix is currently held on $1 million bail at the Byrd Detention Center in Murrieta.
Sgt. Brian Gutierrez of the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department stated that Minnix confronted his former partner on August 15, 2020, at approximately 10:00 am at a residence on Peridot Court, near Osprey Street, and proceeded to shoot her with a handgun.
The victim, referred to as “D.S.” in court documents, sustained multiple injuries and underwent surgery at a hospital.
Fortunately, she has since made a full recovery.
Despite extensive search efforts by deputies, Minnix remained elusive, and an arrest warrant was issued on August 20th. For the following six weeks, fugitive apprehension investigators diligently worked on tracking him down.
Finally, on October 4, 2020, the defendant was located and apprehended without incident in Dallas, Texas.
Court records reveal that Minnix has previous convictions for assault with a deadly weapon, domestic abuse, and violation of a criminal protective order.
