Tragic Loss: Philadelphia Reporter Josh Kruger Fatally Shot

Award-winning Philadelphia journalist Josh Kruger was tragically shot and killed at his home on Sunday.

Kruger, 39, was discovered outside his residence with multiple gunshot wounds to his chest and abdomen. Despite being rushed to the hospital, he succumbed to his injuries.

Although no arrests have been made, the police have identified a person of interest in the case.

According to Deputy Commissioner Frank Vanore of the Philadelphia Police Department, there was no evidence of forced entry into Kruger’s home. The shooter apparently fired at him seven times from the base of the stairs before fleeing.

Vanore stated, “Either the door was open, or the offender knew how to get the door open. We just don’t know yet.”

Prior to his tragic death, Kruger had expressed concerns on social media about incidents involving his home, including a break-in by an estranged partner.

Kruger had a remarkable life journey, experiencing homelessness and addiction before transitioning into journalism. He also served in Philadelphia’s city government, working as Mayor Jim Kenney’s content director and communications director for the Office of Homeless Services.

Upon returning to journalism in 2021, Kruger focused on writing about the issues faced by the city’s most vulnerable residents. His work appeared in publications such as The Philadelphia Citizen, The Philadelphia Inquirer, LGBTQ Nation, and POZ Magazine, where he candidly shared his experiences as an HIV+ gay man who had stopped taking his medication.

Following his tragic death, local organizations and friends expressed their admiration for Kruger’s impactful legacy.

The William Way LGBT Community Center, where Kruger had previously worked, paid tribute to him, highlighting his contributions to the development of the center.

Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner and the DA’s LGBTQ+ Advisory Committee described Kruger as a devoted advocate for justice in the LGBTQ+ and recovery communities.

They stated, “Josh Kruger lifted up the most vulnerable and stigmatized people in our communities – particularly unhoused people living with addiction… His recovery, survival, and successes showed what’s possible when politicians and elected leaders reject bigotry and work affirmatively to uplift all people.”
